JWIN JX-B32A AM/FM Stereo Cassette Player with Bass Boost (JWIN JXB32A) Review

JWIN JX-B32A AM/FM Stereo Cassette Player with Bass Boost....because there's no reverse button on this pos! Not very convenient if you want to hear something again; you'll have to stop the tape, take it out, insert it on side B, fast forward and then take it back out and put it back in on side A. I guess at this price, you can't expect many standard features. Good thing these guys don't build cars too -- you'd probably have to pay more for a reverse gear.

Sony SRF-M73 Sports Walkman AM/FM Stereo with Mega Bass Review

Sony SRF-M73 Sports Walkman AM/FM Stereo with Mega BassThis product exemplifies the decline of Sony quality. Unless they redesigned this model since I bought one in December 2000, it is not an armband radio. It only has a strap suitable for hanging on something, or wrapping around your wrist. It does have a belt clip. To release the clip manually, you push on the tab. To release it automatically, you put it on your belt. Unfortunately, the automatic release feature occurs when you least expect it, usually when standing over some hard surface like concrete or a glass table top. The best way I have found to carry the unit usually is to put it in my pocket.Definitely not recommended for sports! The tuning and reception are very poor indeed, with station bleed through, regardless of inside or outside location.Setting the digital to 98.7 yields 103FM usually. That does not happen with any other of my radios at home. There are switches on the back for Mega Bass and FM Sensitivity. These are cheap switches which never fully "click" into place, requiring constant fiddling that results in shorting static.
There are some good features, like the locking feature, which either locks the station setting or power off. This is necessary because the buttons tend to get pushed (especially when in my pocket). The volume control, however, does not lock in, and may turn up or down unexpectedly. Do not buy one of these, and please consider Panasonic or JVC products. All my JVC and Panasonic products are topnotch, while every walkman I ever owned an most recently my Sony video recorder have broken. And I babied them. So no more phony baloney Sony for me!!

Sony SRF85 Sports Walkman AM/FM Stereo Radio Review

Sony SRF85 Sports Walkman AM/FM Stereo RadioIf you want a radio for working out this one is great. It holds to your arm really well and the sound is really good. It also gets good reception.
The only downside is that the arm band is velcro and it looks like that might get really fuzzy after too much use.
But if you are looking for a cheap radio for excercising, this one is great!

Sony WM-FX244 Walkman Digital Tuning AM/FM Stereo Cassette Player Review

Sony WM-FX244 Walkman Digital Tuning AM/FM Stereo Cassette PlayerI've owned two of these for the past 7 years, using them approx. 5 hours each day, 4 days a week in the elements. This thing is tough with the strongest AM reception I've ever come across. Pleased with the adapter and control placements. Only downside is with today's players it seems bulky.

Aiwa HS-TX426 radio cassette stereo Review

Aiwa HS-TX426 radio cassette stereoI've had this product for two months. I'm pleased with how it works. Finding cassette players these days at a reasonable price is difficult. The reason I gave only 4 stars is because I can hear the tape turning when it plays and it can sometimes be annoying. Overall though I am pleased with the product and happy that I don't have to buy CD or MPs versions of some of my favorite tapes.

Sony WM-FX467 Digital AM/FM Stereo Cassette Walkman Review

Sony WM-FX467 Digital AM/FM Stereo Cassette WalkmanWhen my 2nd cousin, Charlie, gave me this as a thankgiving present. I thought nothing of it at first because I already have 2 other walkmans. But when I tried it (with the stylish black leather cover included with the package) it was so so great I haven't used the other 2 since. The sound for the radio(if its on the right frequency which this is more likely deliever because it goes by .1s) and cassette is as clear and crisp as like nothing else I ever heard before. The same goes the same for the cassette with its new anti-rolling feature you'll have continuing smooth sound despite movement. More than that it has this new feature that allows you to hear whats on tv (non-cable channels) which allows me to enjoy Jay Leno's jokes at night in bed. Not to mention there is the ability to preset radio and tv channels so you can quickly switch from one radio station to the next without the hassle of flipping stations. Along with megabass for to make this small easily portable radio to practically have surround sound. And suprisinly all these new futures (and a few other minor ones) are so easy to use, Forrest Gump would have figured them out within 15 minutes. However despite all those great qualities it has two very very minor problems. The battery light is not really that accurate because when the light says no batteries, you actually got about an hour left (total battery life, about 14 hours give or take 4) and since the switching of frequencies goes by .1, if your new to radio its gonna take a while to explorer all the frequinces and find whats good. Other than that this a great product for its price (you'll get it back from not changing the 2 AA batteries so often) that is great gift for anyone to have something to listen at home or while traveling.

Sony Portable Sports AM/FM Cassette w/ TV/Weather Band (WMFS421) Review

Sony Portable Sports AM/FM Cassette w/ TV/Weather BandOne long-asserted myth of consumer capitalism is that products improve over time, tested and winnowed by the market. This Walkman disproves that. I had a Sony Walkman that I used every day for over a year (until I dropped it down the side of a mountain); it had auto-reverse, a convenient belt clip, it was compact enough to fit into a pocket; it was everything I wanted in a Walkman. And, of course, it's not being made anymore. Instead, you have stuff like this.
This is a device that's designed for one apparent use: to hold in your hand (a large hand; it's too big for my wife to hold comfortably) (and only in your right hand; it is not laid out to fit comfortably in the left hand) while jogging in the rain. Or, perhaps, trail running or some ther "edge" sport.
It's big and heavy; about twice as large as it needs to be. This means, among other things, that you can't easily fit it into a pocket.
The cassette bay opens a bit like a submarine hatch, which is to say it takes two hands and a lot of attention to get the cassette in and out. So, you'd think they'd put auto-reverse in it to reduce mucking around (and keep the water out) but they don't.
The volume knob is very easy to find and adjust, but if the Walkman is anywhere but in your hand (in a coat pocket, perhaps?) the volume changes every time you move.
There's a belt clip, which is on the short list of things I need on a Walkman, but there's also a fabric strap to hold it onto your hand with, and the strap, which is not removable, gets in the way of the belt clip and makes it really difficult to clip securely.
It is ostensibly water-resistant (though it's not meant to play underwater) and there's a rubber seal in the cassette bay. I use my Walkmen primarily for bicycling to work in rainy Seattle, and I've never had a problem with any of them being damaged by water. I guess I'm not extreme enough. This would be a useful feature for a kayaker, I suppose, except that a kayaker would have a hard time holding it in one hand, as he paddled.
But it looks great: if you have one of those traffic-cone yellow Nissan Xterras, this Walkman would look really cool sitting on the hood.

Sony TCM-400DV - Cassette recorder - silver Review

Sony TCM-400DV - Cassette recorder - silverIt's really hard to find any cassette player-recorder these days.I've tried several for language tapes.Sony is definitely the clearest sounding portable there is.It's super easy to use; can use the buttons with gloves on.And I like the availability of an AC adapter - a few less batteries into the environment.Suggestions for improvement would be: a larger counter and firmer buttons controlling "REC TIME" and "speed control". Sony WMFS499 Sports Walkman Review

Sony WMFS499 Sports WalkmanI have two older model Walkmans and I dropped both of them by accident and the cassette tape player feature no longer works. To my surprise, when I went to several local stores, I couldn't find a similar Walkman for sale.I guess with the i-Pods and other new technology, the tape players are being phased out.I bought a newer model Sony Walkman at Target and the sound quality of the tape was so awful I took it right back. These players that only use one battery have terrible sound quality I've found. The FM radio stations had terrible reception, too.
I found this Sony WMFS499 Sports Walkman for sale here on Amazon.com and purchased it and I love it!Since I use my Walkman for walking and running, I need a durable player that can withstand being dropped and getting damp in the rain, and the case on my new player seems indestructible. The sound quality of both the FM radio and tape player are fantastic!I decided to buy another one to have as a spare in case I lose this one. That sounds kind of crazy, but having a good tape player for exercise is important to me and I don't want to ever risk being without my Sports Walkman.

Sony WMFX277 Digital AM/FM Stereo Cassette Walkman Review

Sony WMFX277 Digital AM/FM Stereo Cassette WalkmanI bought this Walkman for the sole reason of owning one for the first timethat came with TV tuner, and I was a little disappointed at what it had tooffer. But first let me get to its high points. The first great thingabout it is its 35 preset stations. That's amazing, with seven offered forTV, seven for AM, and 21 for FM.They're all very easy to set. Then ithas for tape two different types of settings, normal setting and Cr02/Metalsetting in case you have those kind of tapes. There's also a hold buttonthat comes in very handy to keep yourself from accidently turning on thewalkman and draining the battery. And there's the AVLS that lowers thevolume instantly when you change from tape from tuner, and the MEGABASS,which greatly enhances the bass, provided you have a good headphone system. It even comes with a leather case in which you place the walkman inside. The leather case comes with a belt clip on it, which was kind of strangesince it would have been better if the belt clip was on the Walkmaninstead. Now for the setbacks. The advertisement said the Walkman lastsaround 25 hours playback, but it feels more like 14 to 15 hours playbackbefore the batteries run dry.I guess it depends on the kind of batteryyou buy. Also the leather case is nice but it's an awful hassle if youdecide to switch or changeover tapes while the leather case is on.Youhave to unstrap it, unplug the headphone, pull it out and put in orchangeover the tape, then strap it and plug the headphone back in.A nicefeature would have been a zipper where the cassette opener was so that wayall you had to do was zip it open and zip it closed, but maybe they'll doit next time. And now for the TV tuner. It is nice to hear TV channelsnow on the Walkman, but only if you don't mind being able to hear oneclearly, and the rest really grainy.I have tried every possible position, but for some reason my Walkman only picks up one channel very well, but therest really bad or not at all.I don't know, but it sort of set me backbecause I bought the thing for the TV tuner in the first place.Butoverall it's still a nice Walkman, with four modes of entertainment that'llkeep you entertained in the long run, for a mid-average price.

SONY Portable AM/FM Cassette Player (WM-FX241) Review

SONY Portable AM/FM Cassette Playerthis tape player is pretty good. It has lots of features and an anti-roll thing for action or bumpy rides. I dont know why it has this metal tape thing, they are not around anymore, in fact, they havent been around for at least 10 years. Lots of presets and digital tuning eliminates the guesswork of manual dial tuning.
Battery low light is a good feature, as opposed to the LED lights on others that are useless. ....This is one of the more high-end recorders, i would reccomend this for an all-around purpose cassette player. Worthy of a buy.
Ratings:
Radio Recpetion...9/10
The radio quality is very good on FM, but only if you leave it on the DX. On local there is unbleivble hissing and static, but on DX the quality is crystal clear. AM recption is mediocare, but I rarely use it
Tape quality... 10/10
The tape quality is perfect, even on old and dusty tapes. 25 hours of tape playback is very nice. Simple, easy controls for the tape. Easy, simple, and good quality.
Ease of use...9/10
It comes with a protective case that clips onto you pocket or belt or whatever. The buttons dont stick out too much, and dont get pressed with the hold feature.
Overall...9.5/10
Very nice player for all purpose

Sony SRF-HM33 Walkman FM/AM Stereo Headphone Radio with 20 Preset Stations Review

Sony SRF-HM33 Walkman FM/AM Stereo Headphone Radio with 20 Preset StationsThis is by the far the best AM/FM headphone radio I've owned and I have owned quite a few. I searched every electronic store in my area trying to find a headphone like this and could only find it through amazon.com.
The clarity of the radio reception is excellent. Having 20 preset stations makes it so easy to switch stations when you don't like the song playing on the current station. This is also the most comfortable headphone radio I've had. I can wear it for hours and it never gets uncomfortable. I also can't deal with having the wired headphones or the ones you wear on your arm, so this one is ideal.
I actually liked this headphone so much I bought two more, one to keep at work and one to give to my husband. He likes it as much as I do.
For the people who gave this product such poor ratings, you must be abusive with your things. I use my headphone so much and switch stations constantly and I have never had any problems with it.
I highly recommend this headphone for anyone wanting a reliable, comfortable, great reception radio, with no wires and the ease of changing stations at the touch of a button.

Sony WM-FX488 Walkman Stereo Cassette Player with TV and Weather Channel Reception Review

Wonderful unit, and reasonably priced, Great for the Audio Book fan.

Product Description:
Sony's WM-FX488 stereo cassette player is portable enough--and, at under half a pound--light enough to go anywhere. In addition to playing tapes, the Walkman offers drift-free, digitally synthesized FM stereo and wideband AM, TV (channels 2 to 13), and weather band (channels 1 to 7) reception.
The player's automatic volume limiter system (AVLS) maintains an even volume level, guarding against unintended level increases and evening the output of musical passages that vary widely in level. Auto-reverse lets you enjoy uninterrupted listening to both sides of a cassette with no need to open the player and turn over the tape, while Mega Bass produces deep, rich bass tones.
For the radio, 40-station preset memory offers one-button tuning to your choice of seven TV stations, four weather-band stations, 24 FM stations, and five AM stations. At the press of a button, the "digital auto preset scanning" feature plays a few seconds of each memorized radio station, in sequence, to help select stations for listening and to determine which to set into memory. An FM local/distant (DX) switch improves reception of fuzzy stations.
Supplied MDR-027 over-ear headphones offer wide dynamic range and clear sound, and the unit also comes with a carry case and belt clip. A single AA battery provides up to 35 hours (maximum, using Sony Alkaline batteries) of continuous tape playback, or up to 40 hours of FM radio reception.

Sony WM-FX281 Cassette Walkman with Digital Tuner Review

Sony WM-FX281 Cassette Walkman with Digital TunerLike many I was looking to replace an old Walkman, but when I tried the WMFX281 I was disappointed to find that the digital radio tuner worked much more poorly than the old dial-style tuners from previous generations of Walkmen. Stations would fade in and out, and there was considerable drift of stations across the dial. For example a station with a strong signal on 96.9 FM would come through all the way over at 91 FM.The machine also feels cheap and fragile compared to older machines - but this is probably all that one can expect for the low price.

The player's automatic volume limiter system (AVLS) maintains an even volume level, guarding against unintended level increases and evening the output of musical passages that vary widely in level. A switch adjusts the sound to accommodate metal-oxide tapes, and Mega Bass produces deep, rich bass tones. Automatic shut-off (in playback mode) extends battery life and helps prevent both mechanical and tape wear by turning off unit at the end of each tape side. Finally, an anti-rolling mechanism maintains stable tape speed to minimize music-distorting "wow and flutter" while the player is in motion.
For the radio, 40-station preset memory offers one-button tuning to your choice of seven TV stations, four weather-band stations, 24 FM stations, and five AM stations. An FM local/distant (DX) switch improves reception of fuzzy stations.
Supplied MDR-027 over-ear headphones offer wide dynamic range and clear sound, and the unit also comes with a carry case and belt clip. Two AA batteries provide up to 32 hours (maximum, using Sony Alkaline batteries) of continuous tape playback, or up to 40 hours of FM radio reception.

Sony SRF-M37V FM/AM/Weather/TV Radio Walkman with 25 Memory Presets Review

Sony SRF-M37V FM/AM/Weather/TV Radio Walkman with 25 Memory PresetsI've had trouble finding a Walkman type radio that works well around Manhattan - FM signal overload and multipath causes noisy reception on most radios in New York City.
The Sony SRF-M37V is the best one I've found so far.It performs better than Sony's previous SRF-M35 model, and it also works better than models I tried from Panasonic and Sangean. While it isn't perfect, the SRF-M37V has a lot less multipath and signal-overload noise than those other models. The local-distant switch does a decent job of cutting down on this kind of interference in the city without killing the stereo separation, and it works much better than the same switch did on the SRF-M35.In "distant" mode, this radio has very good FMsensitivity. However, I'm not able to pull in a couple of my favorite low-powered out-of-town & college stations because those frequencies get overpowered by nearby local signals.I've had the same problem with every other Walkman-type radio I've tried though, so it's not just a fault of this one.
The AM section seems to have good sensitivity too, but the sound quality isn't as crisp as other models, including the SRF-M35.The treble is rolled off so sharply that it sounds rather muffled and you can't hear "S" sounds in normal speech.I know audio quality isn't a priority for AM radio but I've still heard better than this.
Reception on the TV and weather bands seems good, although the audio level is a little low on both.I have to turn up the volume nearly all the way to get a normal listening level.
Overall fidelity is very good at low volume but you can't turn it up very loud before it starts to distort.I expect this is because it runs on a single AAA battery so the headphone amp is probably underpowered.Stereo separation is great. There seems to be a bit of bass boost built in, which is not switchable, so the bass is the first thing to distort at higher volume levels. The supplied headphones sound like typical cheap Walkman phones, and aren't as good as the ones that came with the SRF-M35.This radio will sound much better if you get some better headphones.
There is a battery status indicator, which is useful. There is also a clock but the time won't show in the display unless you turn the radio off.
The bottom line is this is a very good radio. It's small, the presets make it easy to tune, and the TV and weather bands are fun to have.If all you need is a Walkman that does a good job at picking up radio I don't think you'll beat this one, especially for the price.

Sony WM-FS221 Sports Walkman Cassette Player Review

Sony WM-FS221 Sports Walkman Cassette PlayerLearn from my mistakes.Don't buy this product!
The name "sports" walkman is tantamount to false advertising for this unit. Each one of these lasts appoximately 2 months . . . if you drop it even once from belt-high -- and it is likely that you will, because the belt clip breaks very easily -- it is finished.
The plastic shell does not protect the mechanism from impact any more than the shell of a [less expensive] model.I've now bought three of these for use while lifting weights at the gym.Because they break so quickly, I've returned all three under warranty, and never heard ANYTHING from SONY.That's three walkmans, within the past year.Three strikes, and it is out.
The design of the product is also poor: the headphone outlet is positioned such that the wire plugs into the bottom of the unit. That means that you lose about 4 inches from an already short headphone cord.Any kind of stretching (such as when doing pull-ups), and the headphones either unplug, or pull the unit off your belt. And when it hits the ground . . . it's finished. Here's another example of a design snafu: the nylon wrist strap is positioned in such a way that it interferes with your use of the belt clip. This configuration means that you must make a choice as soon as you buy the unit: either commit to strapping the device to your arm or wrist with the belt-clip bulge on your skin, or cut the nylon strap off and wear it on your belt.Yet another example of poor layout: the battery door opens counter-intuitively: unlike other walkman-like devices I've used, you must push the clip toward the direction of the door hinge. This wouldn't be a problem, except that Sony chose to also put the battery compartment inside the cassette player itself.Accordingly, removing the cassette often results in opening the battery compartment (and dropping the batteries).
The bottom line is this: if you buy this product expecting "sport" to equate to "durable" (as I did), you are kidding yourself. If you buy it for listening to music while safely cradled in a nest of pillows, you're wasting your money: units half the price that do not hold themselves out to be "sports" anything will deliver the same sound quality.

Sony WM-FS222 S2 Sports Walkman Stereo Cassette Player with FM/AM/TV and Weather Radio Review

Sony WM-FS222 S2 Sports Walkman Stereo Cassette Player with FM/AM/TV and Weather RadioThis Sony portable cassette tape player is well designed and ruggedly constructed. Unfortunately, its sound quality leaves a great deal to be desired. First of all, I was unhappy with the headphones which delivered a somewhat thin and 'tinny' reproduction of the music I sampled over the three weeks I tested this walkman (which I finally returned for credit). Also, at relatively low volumes I was surprised to encounter unacceptable levels of distortion during playback. I recently purchased a Sony Psych CD Walkman model D-EJ360 which, by comparison, is so far superior in its sound quality to the Sony WM-FS222 S2 Sports Cassette Walkman under review that it became literally impossible for me to listen to the tape player without feeling irritated and aggrieved (thus the necessity to return it!). Two other disappointing features of this S2 product bear mentioning. The included "belt clip" is NOT a rigid plastic fixture of the player case itself but rather an addition to the flexible strap used for holding the walkman by hand. It therefore does not provide a secure attachment for vigorous walking or running. And there is no auto-reverse functionality. Which seems a significant lack given the price of the item. Finally, having submitted a meticulously documented rebate claim for a Sony t-shirt upon receiving this walkman, I was notified that I was ineligible for my gift as I had failed to provide the requisite UPC code and sales receipt. A sad ending to a thoroughly frustrating experience with a company I have come to expect so much more from.

Sony TCM-400DV Pressman Standard Cassette Recorder Review

Sony TCM-400DV Pressman Standard Cassette RecorderAt one time "Sony" had a very good reputation for quality products.
This cassette recorder was anything but a quality product (mechanically,
everything worked just fine).Sound reproduction was abysmal -- far worse
than poor!A very loud "hissss" overrode the recording -- even when I used
an external microphone.I did not expect a 4track recorder, but what I
got should be an embarrassment to any manufacturer.Shame on you SONY!!

Sony WM-FX195 Walkman AM / FM Stereo Cassette Player with Auto Shut-Off Review

Sony WM-FX195 Walkman AM / FM Stereo Cassette Player with Auto Shut-OffI purchased this because it was a Sony thinking it would be able to take the beating I would give it trying to listen to tapes while weeding strawberries several hours a day. It worked fine the first month or so and then the sound began to distort like it wasn't getting enough power. Even with a change of batteries it did the same thing. It is comfortable to wear but the headset would slip a lot while I was bending over so had to wear a hat to hold it in place. I listen to books on tape so sound quality isn't a priority but being able to understand the words is! I'm now looking for a replacement which will meet my needs.

Walkman Car Connecting Pack for MD Walkman and CD Walkman (Model# CPA-9C) Review

Walkman Car Connecting Pack for MD Walkman and CD WalkmanI originally purchased this cassette adapter to listen to CD's in my Neon which did not have a CD player. This served its purpose well- great sound quality, the cassette was not loud in the cassette deck as a previous one had been, and I was finally able to listen to CD's in my car during the commute.
Eight months ago, I traded in the Neon for a Jetta which had both a CD and cassette player, so the cassette adapter wound up collecting dust along with my old cell phone and other assorted items in my electronics graveyard. But this week I purchased an iPod, and I also got an iRock FM transmitter to listen to my MP3's at work and during the commute.Unfortunately that is not the best product in the world.I contemplated exchanging the iRock for a Belkin FM transmitter, when it was suggested to me that I try a car cassette adapter.I dug through the electronics graveyard, and almost thought I had thrown this out when I found it.I plugged it into the headphone jack of the iPod, then played the cassette on my stereo. The sound quality is excellent on this as well.
This is an excellent product if you have a car with only a cassette player, and want to listen to CDs, or if you have an iPod and want to listen to MP3's cheaply and easily.
A piece of advice, though for those who need the adapter for their CD player: you may want to opt instead for an actual car pack, which has a cigarette lighter adapter for the CD player, otherwise you'll be burning through the batteries like crazy.

Product Description:
The Sony CPA-9C cassette adaptor allows you to connect your minidisc or CD player to a vehicle cassette player. While this Sony product works best with Sony CD and MD players, the adaptor will operate with non-Sony products as well. There are a couple of key features to this adaptor which make it a fine choice. The first notable feature is the spring-loaded head. The head will automatically adjust itself to your vehicle's cassette deck, ensuring that the two heads have optimum contact and transfer the best possible sound. The second key feature is the silent mechanism. A silent mechanism yields less operational noise and a better quality MD or CD sound. This adaptor works with all cassette players which require you to insert the tape opening facing the side. The mini-plug inserts into a portable CD or MD headphone jack. The cassette adaptor is a cheap way to make your vehicle CD and MD operational.

Sony WM-FX290 Stereo Cassette Player with FM/AM/TV/Weather Tuning Review

Sony WM-FX290 Stereo Cassette Player with FM/AM/TV/Weather TuningThe WM-FX290 plays tapes clearly without the warbly speed changes (known as "wow and flutter") that render piano music unbearable. At this price point, competency is the key; anything better is icing on the cake.

These days, people shopping for a cassette Walkman probably listen to audiobooks or have a boxful of old tapes they think they'll get around to playing. Neither customer likely expects Dolby noise reduction or the ability to play CrO2 or metal tapes. Also, in case you were planning to dictate notes to self, note now that this unit does NOT record.

The pleasant surprise is what you DON'T expect to find at this price: Attractive styling, digital tuning with presets, comfortable headphones, exceptional battery life (from one AA battery!), and a "hold" button that prevents unintended station changes when the unit is stuffed in a pocket.

What isn't so hot? Well, weather band has weak reception even in areas with usable signal, the "bass boost" function produces a sonic mudslide that will alarm even "boom car" afficionados, and the nearly opaque clamshell makes you eject to read the tape label or see how much tape remains on a side (yikes).

At this humble price point, the presence of a few nice touches -- and lack of jarring penalties -- spells an easy five stars.

Sony TCM-210DV Standard Cassette Voice Recorder Review

Sony TCM-210DV Standard Cassette Voice RecorderThis is pretty much the perfect tape recorder for interviews, whether live or phone -- sturdy but light for carrying, with plenty of bells and whistles but a snap to learn to use. (However, inserting tapes isslightly harder than in some other machines.) You can choose slow-speed recording to double the length of your tape (e.g., get two hours of talk on a 60-minute tape), which minimizes interrupting the flow of the interview to change sides or tapes. On playback, a speed-control dial lets you control speed and tone of speech -- you can slow down a fast jabberer to transcribe, or speed up to chipmonk-voices past the less useful chatter without missing anything. Plugging in the adapter spares the batteries when transcribing, i.e. when hitting the "pause" button instead of "stop" for interruptions that last longer than anticipated. Sound quality is fine for talk. Not much machine-hiss, and even less on slow speed than on regular speed. Much easier to change batteries than on my previous tape recorder(another Sony which finally died after 25 years of service). Haven't tried this machine for music.

Sony WM-EX190 Walkman Stereo Cassette Player with Anti-Rolling Mechanism Review

Sony WM-EX190 Walkman Stereo Cassette Player with Anti-Rolling MechanismIf you are just looking for a basic no-frills cassette Walkman and you are not a perfectionist sound aficionado -- walk right on by, and buy something else. This Walkman has a nice price, but is a lot less than it sounds.

I had thought I could stand anything, since all I was looking for was a basic Walkman to listen to music and audiobooks. But I actually returned mine (And if I eat the shipping to return an item, that really says something!) What made it impossible for me was that the sound was extremely tinny and hissy, so much so that it hurt my ears. Using the bass-boost actually boosted the tinniness as much as the bass, so that was no help. Using the volume limiter did reduce the tinniness somewhat, but it still sounded terrible. I have bought inexpensive Sony Walkmans for years and loved them, and I bought a cheap Sony microcassette recorder a few weeks ago which is terrific, so I had felt confident enough to buy the EX-190. But the basic sound was unbearable.

To mention the good points, I really like the way it looks. The plastic is cheap, but light-weight. The buttons go on and off easily, unlike some which are too hard to press or which don't engage every time you press them. There is no auto-reverse, so you insomniacs will have to get up, flip the tape, and try to get drowsy again! Overall, I feel it *would* be a decent little machine, except that the sound is just too awful.

Sony Walkman Digital Tuning Weather FM/AM Stereo Cassette Player (Silver) Review

Sony Walkman Digital Tuning Weather FM/AM Stereo Cassette PlayerThis is the same item as the FX-290, now with a W added. Only difference is the absence of the TV audio band, which will be irrelevent next February. I ve had three of these walkmans in the past couple of years. One shattered upon impact to the ground. I didn't have the case on it, and with the other two the fast forward button, which I use quite a bit fell off.

That being said, this is probably the greatest walkman I ve owned. The radio cassette player is a dying breed and I m glad to see Sony put out a new version of an old favorite. With 35 hours on one AA battery, this is one of the great values. I still have hundreds of cassette tapes that I have taped from XM the last couple of years, and I still take my walks listening to those. Transferring to a CD is an option, but its too much of a bother. With the belt clip its so easy to just walk listening to a cassette, even though the sound quality is not as good as a CD,but it fits my purposes fine.

With AM and FM and all the presets, and a weather band this is a nice value for $30 and free shipping. I m glad I still have my other two units without the fast forward button. This is becoming a relic, and I want to make sure I have this walkman for some time to come. No MP3 for me. I m satisfied with this unit.
